Many people try losing weight by dieting and often they will initially lose some weight, only to find that they put it back on and in some cases, even more. Some people spend much of their lives constantly struggling with their weight and with diets that simply don't work, this can lead to a situation where food becomes their enermy. There are studies that show that constant and obsessive dieting can actually make you put on weight. BBC news 2003
A positive and healthy relationship with food is one whereby you only eat when your hungry and stop before your full. It takes the brain 20 minutes to register that you have eaten, by this time you could have over eaten. Often people will eat when they actually are thirsty as the brain sends the same type of signals and we misinterprate this. Food is essential to us providing us with energy and nourishment and a healthy diet along with regular exercise keeps us healthy. Negative eating habits are very often caused by stress, guilt, fear of loss and anxiety.
Binge-eating is a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of over-eating during which a person feels a loss of control over their eating. Unlike bulimia, binge-eating episodes are not followed by purging, excessive exercise or fasting. As a result people with binge-eating disorders can be overweight or obese. People with this type of disorder experience negative feelings related to their loss of control and guilt over their habit, which in turn can lead to more binge eating.
Emotional eating - Many of us will eat when they become upset, bored, stressed, angry or lonely. When eating for any emotional reasons we never really fell satisfied afterwards this is largely because it wasn't really hunger that we were trying to satisfied.
Eating Disorders
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating followed by compulsory behaviours. Purging bulimia is the most common form this includes vomiting, fasting, overexercising and the use of laxatives, enemas and diuretics drugs. Anorexia nervosa is a a psychiatric disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia are known to commonly control body weight through the means of voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs.
